Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines), located at 909 Locust, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded LEED Silver certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. FHLB Des Moines achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in areas including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Recently, FHLB Des Moines also received the WELL Health-Safety Rating from the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI). The rating helps buildings and organizations address the health, safety and well-being of their tenants. High standards must be met in cleaning procedures, emergency preparedness, health services resources, air and water quality, and communication.

“The LEED Certification and the WELL Health-Safety Rating demonstrate how FHLB Des Moines is going above and beyond to ensure our building is operating to the highest level of sustainability,” says John Schwechel, FHLB Des Moines facilities director. “This investment shows our commitment to our employees and the other tenants in the building by providing a safe and healthy environment.”

“LEED certification is the ultimate recognition of global green building leadership, signaling that a space has undergone rigorous third-party verification and meets the highest green building standards,” said Peter Templeton, president and CEO, USGBC. “The success of LEED is due to the partnership and support of those committed to advancing green building and sustainability. Each new LEED certification brings us one step closer to revolutionizing the spaces where we live, learn, work and play.”
