Kansas City and Waverly community housing partners celebrated over $1 million in housing grants through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines) Competitive Affordable Housing Program (AHP) on Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II (D-MO) was on-hand to make the announcements, which will help over 50 residents find safe and affordable housing.
Through partnerships with member financial institutions and community partners, FHLB Des Moines awarded $745,707 to The Benilde Hall Program through Country Club Bank to assist 25 residents and $302,600 to the Waverly Senior Citizens Housing Authority (WSCHA).
The Benilde Hall Program will use their grant to consolidate their facility with the “Safe Haven” program under contract with the Veterans Administration. Both programs serve homeless adults with mental health, substance abuse, and/or addiction issues. WSCHA will use their grant to replace flooring, large appliances, and each roof in the 24-unit senior living complex. The complex houses residents who are disabled, and/or sixty-two years or older.
“Thanks to community partners and FLHB Des Moines we have found a way to help families find the homes they deserve. We must continue to make sure this is not a struggle for people in the future,” Congressman Cleaver said.
FHLB Des Moines returns 10 percent of its net income annually to assist with housing needs throughout its district, consisting of 13 states and three U.S. Pacific territories. Since the inception of the program in 1990, FHLB Des Moines has awarded $74.1 million for housing in the state of Missouri to benefit more than 15,300 homeowners.
